Market day in Bassano – a small town just outside of Loria, where the girls enjoyed the shopping and the gents, an old fashioned style shave and a haircut from an old school Italian barber. Bellissimo!!!! We stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies to get ready for the family open-house on Sunday, before we headed to a lunch at Maurizio and Nives Porcellato’s. A house of many layers….a lovely casa, backyard oasis, garden, and then to the back where the pigs, rabbits and chickens are kept. So cool. Not to be missed is the cantina where Maurizio cures his own salumi, prosciutto, and pancetta – oh my! Pig is king here in Italy and we are so enjoying it!!!! We were treated to a beautiful antipasti lunch with lots of laughs and charades breaking the language barrier. Grazie Maurizio and Nives!!!!
In the afternoon we had some much needed down time, and got some rest for a family dinner hosted by Mr Val’s brother Saverio. At a local osteria, 25 or so family members dined on antipasti of salumi, prosciutto, fagioli, potato, insalata, baccala ( salted cod ) served with white polenta, and a variety of cheese, nuts and flans. The red wine flowed, the limoncello and grappa were passed up and down the table, and the volume was on high, many arms a flying. Mamma Mia! A good time was had by all….quite a welcome to Loria.
We ended the evening enjoying the portico at Italo’s casa, some digestivo and the company of family back home via Skype….another wonderful day on our adventure. Tomorrow, the Porcellato open house. Ciao for now.
